Venezia, Italy

Stepping out of the train station in Venice plants you squarely in a different world. We had to stop a moment and take it all in.

It took 45 minutes to walk the 5 minutes from the Vaporetto to our hotel because we were hopelessly lost! Yes, the "street" it is on is only an armslength across. The view from our "penthouse" suite gazed over the rooftops of Venice.

I had to get out immediately to go see the famed Piazzo San Marco. Basillica San Marco is amazing!

Venice is filled with photo opps and these four fine ladies were definitely into making the most of them.

In our search for a specific mask-making shop, we stumbled upon this tiny church of Rafael. Turns out it is the oldest in Venice and was possibly the best cared for of any we've seen in Italy. Floors and chairs were all highly polished. Beautiful!

Views from the top of the tower in Piazza San Marco were astounding. Just looking down on the Piazza made the trip worthwhile.

Katherine Hepburn made a movie back in the early 60s set in Venice. The shopkeeper she fell in love with was supposedly located in this sad and boarded up square. She fell in the canal just behind where I'm standing to take the photo.

In a state of acute hunger, we tracked back and forth the little streets of Venice looking for this particular trattoria that the ladies' Italian teacher had recommended. It was worth the wait. One of our longest meals, it also holds the record for the most costly at 230 Euros!

DW and I seriously thought about the possibility of going back to school when we saw the campus of this little university.

We'd read about the Church of St. Pantalone but when we got to it we found it didn't open until 4:00. So we kept wandering around until it opened. This poor shot of the ceiling still reveals what a detailed and immense piece of artwork it is. Bella!

A slender thread

"Impossibly photogenic and connected to reality by only a slender thread" was approximately how a friend described Venice recently. How true. Our three days there gave us only a sample of what the city had to offer!
